Graveyards are attached to churches, while cemeteries don’t have to be. And you can bury ashes in a cemetery, but not in a graveyard.

There’s also a difference between tomb and grave? A grave is a hole in the ground where you place the deceased, while a tomb is a chamber or vault “built over a place where a body has been laid.”1 It can be a freestanding building or a room carved into rock.

By the way, people obsessed with cemeteries and graveyards are called Taphophiles. Are you one? If you’re not sure, click here to find out.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!
