Welcome to April 2. Did you survive yesterday’s April Fool’s Day jokes? Or are you one of those people who love to play the jokes?

Did you know no one knows exactly when and where April Food’s Day originated? April 1, 1700, though, is the day it began its rise in popularity, thanks to English pranksters playing practical jokes on each other.

Choose a Day

Have you ever looked at a “National Day of . . .” calendar?  Each day of the year has several things to be celebrated, some crazier than others.  April 2 isn’t too bad. Today is . . .

National DIY Day. Do you DIY (Do It Yourself)? I do. My problem, though, is there are too many things to do and not enough hours in the day to do them.

National Ferret Day. Hard to get into celebrating this one since I don’t own a ferret, but . . .

DYK ferrets make good pets? They’re cute; playful and curious; sociable, friendly, and affectionate; intelligent; quiet; small; easy to feed; litter trainable; easy to exercise; and each has its own distinct personality.

International Firewalk Day. It’s even harder to get into this day. I know firewalking isn’t magical—or painful, if done correctly—but really, who wants to walk on hot coals?

DYK walking is part of the secret? Continued movement means the feet aren’t on the coals long enough to be burned. However, running pushes the feet deeper into the embers and is more likely to result in burns to the top of the feet.

World Autism Awareness Day. This is a day we should all get behind.

DYK approximately 1 in 44 children in the US is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)? DYK boys are four times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with it? DYK Autism affects all ethnic and socioeconomic groups? DYK there is no medical detection for Autism?

Love Your Produce Manager Day. Don’t get me wrong, fresh veggies are important, but rather than celebrating this one day a year, wouldn’t simple thank yous throughout the year be more appreciated?

Tangible Karma Day. A day to pass to others, things you no longer need. Based on the Golden Rule and “You reap what you sow” and “What goes around comes around” ideas, this day of helping others brings good stuff back to you. My opinion? This is another day that should be practiced throughout the year.

International Pillow Fight Day. Have you ever had a pillow fight? If not, today’s the day to do it.

International Children’s Book Day. As a writer and reader, this is my preferred choice of today’s National and International Days. Ask a child to read their favorite book to you. If they’re too young to read, you read to them. This promotes their love of reading, and, as a bonus, gets you a nice cuddle.

Did you know April 2 was chosen for International Children’s Book Day because it’s the birthday of Danish author Hans Christian Anderson? Born in 1805, he wrote 168 tales, three of which are The Princess and the Pea, The Little Mermaid, and The Ugly Duckling.

And the Winner Is . . .

Which one—or ones—will you choose to celebrate? If you choose to get a pet ferret or attempt firewalking, please let me know how it goes! (And remember, when firewalking, walk don’t run.)
